New Zealand authorities have announced uncommon severe gust advisories - the highest alert level - in central regions such as these major districts.

Residents have been urged to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for more utility disruptions.

Widespread Destruction and Emergency Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting homes mostly in the South Island, although officials report that energy was being restored progressively.

Domestic outlets have stated that in certain areas structures have suffered roof damage, while trees and electricity poles have been toppled by the gusts.

Across Wellington, a man was killed after being struck by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Also in the capital, a woman was pushed toward oncoming traffic on a road by a intensive burst, in a moment that was recorded in a viral dashcam video.

Flights entering and leaving the urban area have been suspended as a result of the winds, while some roads and libraries are shut down.

Meanwhile Canterbury officials have issued a state of emergency, to facilitate recovery activities.

Strike Action During Harsh Conditions

The wild winds on today come as tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers are engaged in what has been called a "mega strike", requesting better pay and working conditions.

But the intense climate has compelled them to alter certain arrangements, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or cancelled.
